North-European goth and renaissance art in Pushkin Museum

Fri, 2011-02-18
The opening of the exhibition 'The Art of Northern Gothic and Renaissance' took place in the Pushkin State Museum of Art in Moscow. It will end on March 13.

On display are 33 paintings, 70 sculptures and 10 pieces of furniture from the late gothic and renaissance period in Northern Europe. The paintings, from the 15th and 16th centuries, are mostly of Flemish origin. The sculpture collection ranges from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The art belongs to the Moscow private collector M.E. Pertchenko. It is without doubt the first time that such a vast collection of art from the 15th and early 16th centuries of Northern Europe has been released to the Russian public.

Among the paintings are pieces of art from Jean Bellegambe and the Master of the Groote Adoration, to name two, and the sculptures include an Antwerp altarpiece and many outstanding groups and statues of Netherlandish and German origin. A fully illustrated and beautifully edited catalogue accompanies this special exhibition. The authors are Vadim Sadkov (paintings), Hans Nieuwdorp (sculptures) and Elena Plink (furniture).
